Gender Equality

The Girl Impact – SDG 5 In Action

Gender equality is defined as the state in which access to rights or opportunities is unaffected by gender. COVID-19 has negatively affected girls and women in terms of the progress that was made over the years as they face heightened discrimination and violence in some parts of the world. The Girl Impact is one such project trying to bridge the endless gender gap in Africa.

Introduction: The Girl Impact.

The Girl Impact is a collaborative project between African Impact and the African Impact Foundation, organizations based in Eastern and Southern Africa. Their goal is to give girls across Africa quality education for a better livelihood and ensure boys in their community see the value of healthy, educated, and empowered women. They provide educational workshops and facilitate income-generating initiatives so young girls can make informed decisions as they move towards womanhood

How do they do it?

They set up volunteer projects in 3 locations: Cape Town, South Africa; Livingstone, Zambia; Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. African Impact provides ground staff and offers volunteer support to carry out programming, workshops, curriculum, and income-generating activities. The African Impact Foundation provides necessary funds for programming and monitors to ensure the projects are successful, sustainable, and have a long-lasting impact.

This project began with grass-roots assessments in each community to further understand the specific challenges and concerns that girls and boys experience in that area. They continue these assessments to ensure accuracy, and all programming and fundraising initiatives are centred on community goals.

Why girls and boys?

The Girl Impact aims to aid in the development and education of girls between the ages of 10 and 18, a crucial stage to prevent hardships otherwise caused due to lack of knowledge. It can be challenging for a young girl in a poverty-ridden community to get an education, leading to teenage pregnancies, HIV, and stunted mental growth.

Their goal is to reduce violence and bullying around girls while also providing outlets for boys to express themselves. Every adolescent boy has the right to health, education, and protection from violence and abuse, but not at the cost of a girl’s right, so they want to encourage boys to advocate for girls in their communities as well.

What are the six pillars?

Young women are change agents, and their leadership has the potential to bring vitality, creativity, and courage that can lead to social change. The Girl Impact can motivate and empower others to take positive action. They can encourage people to question systems and beliefs that limit people’s lives and choices. The Girl Impact focuses on empowering these young women in Africa and this is achieved through their 6-Pillar Framework:

  1. Self-confidence
  2. Income generation
  3. Education
  4. Health
  5. Early Pregnancy
  6. Safety
